Developing a Treatment Method for Dementia and Delirium Patients using Virtual Reality

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) is a modern technology that has its applications in various domains of life and medical science is no exception. VR can be used to treat number of diseases such as Anxiety Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Postoperative Recovery, Mild cognitive Impairment (MCI) to name a few. The primary goal of this work is to develop a user-friendly therapy treatment software tool for Dementia and Delirium by employing VR. The developed tool can provide contemporary technology, and a meditation technique to improve concentration and cognitive function by providing a semi-immersive experience in a virtual environment. A mobile application, an APK version, has been created using React Native to provide a user-friendly, cost-effective experience for patients. Further, a remote monitoring system is built that provides an effortless way for medical professionals and caregivers to track their patients' improvement and progress. A specially trained neural network has been implemented to validate the data and receive comprehensible insights about the progress of patients who are treated with this treatment method for 2 months. This paper aims to describe the outcomes achieved by implementing this treatment method among dementia and dementia patients in Sri Lanka.
